the fox.
When there were rainy days in Berlin (and there were a lot), foxes would come out of hiding. THIS fox happened to be sitting in front of my apartment, and I made the mistake of taking a picture of it. Shorty after the picture, the fox ran in front of my door and proceeded to chase me around the neighborhood. Good times :)

UEFA Football
Anyone who knows me knows just how much I LOVE watching sports. But to my surprise, being in the host country of the UEFA football tournament was actually exciting. In the six weeks that I was in Berlin, I, Julia Guss, watched and paid attention to multiple soccer games. Luckily, this sports demon went away after Germany lost, and I have returned to my normal self.

back problems
My life of "back problems" would not fit into a "short story," but the drama my back caused in Berlin can. My host family initially provided me with a "bed" that was so bad it landed me in the hospital. Luckily, the bed issue was resolved, but the spine issue certainly was not.
One of, if not THE, main reason(s) I decided to learn German and study abroad in Germany is to be able to do a research internship next summer. I took Dr. Kahn’s “History of Race and Immigration in Europe” class last spring, which resulted in me changing my majors and future career goals. Dr. Kahn was working on a research project in Berlin when I was studying there, and she let me shadow her for a day at the Bundesarchiv. My takeaways are that I’m very excited about next summer and that I really need to learn more German.
berlin’s infamous nightlife
Berlin’s techno scene has much more depth than it may appear. On the surface, it is an exclusive nightlife culture with loud, repetitive music and no lyrics. While that description may have some merit, it comes with a high degree of complexity. There is so much complexity that I’m considering making techno the main topic of my future research project in Germany. Because of that, I was determined to get into the World’s most exclusive nightclub: Berghain. Unfortunately, my endeavors have been entirely unsuccessful. It turns out that I don’t have the right “vibes” … yet.
